Permaculture , a holistic tool to move towards
the new socioeconomic paradigm.

Sara Arnaiz

From the 70s, when the concept of Permaculture was created, until today, it has been
a source of inspiration and and creative solutions for many people around the world in
their process of awakening.

There are many ways to define Permaculture (PC). For me it’s an access point allowing us
to enter a very different paradigm to the one presented to us by “education”, “media”,
“History”, “science”, etc. A paradigm where relationships among the elements that conform
to a system are healthy and fortunate. This magic environment help us achieve maximum
performance with minimum effort and, as a result, the system itself is self sustainable.

Fractal and holistic gaze
A Permaculture design takes into account, not only the system that is to be designed in
its entirety, with its multiple relationships between elements, but also the broader systems
of which it forms. In fact, we become aware of the infinite ways in which some systems are
affected to others, and we try to achieve this for mutual benefit. Thus, we can see a universe
formed in turn by universes, where by focusing on creating healthy relationships in one of
them, we project this intention onwards to transform other universes.

Thus, in this workshop we will look from the point where we will be ‹‹ Q ››, towards the
environment in which it is located and the systems of which it is part. We will see that these
systems are also part of larger ones, which in turn affect Q. In this model of different scales,
we will also look from the point of view of our own lives to the different systems in which we
are included. This broader view helps us give another dimension to our actions, and to project
our responsibility far beyond the ego-centrism with which we learned to "prosper" as part of
capitalist society.

Self-responsibility
Self-responsibility is one of PC guidelines. It not only empowers us but it also makes us get
out of the wheel of cause-effect, fault-punishment, employer-employee, tenant-landlord, etc.
If each of us takes responsibility for our own lives and cooperate as part of groups, we will
be totally independent, without needing to be accountable to anyone.

Relationships between elements oriented
The design process is the art of understanding the characteristics, needs and products of the
different elements that form a system, so that we can place them in it for maximum benefit of
our own and the whole group.

Practice:

Works at Q farm:
Design of a new garden and its implementation. Through the daily practice in Nature,
we will find the inspiration Nature offers us to find sustainable solutions in other areas.

Personal design:
Attendees can bring their own projects, ideas or dreams, and we will try to shape them with
permaculture tools.

Social design:
With the relationships Neus and Q have created in their social environment as a starting point,
we will share views with groups from different fields: existing and potential agroecological
production and consumption networks, environmental activism, and new initiatives around
political responsibility.

FACILITATOR: Sara Arnaiz

Permaculturist, activist and mother of 4 children, she started in permaculture in 1998 with
Andy Langford, pioneer in designing invisible structures or systems that include people and
the relationships among them. Also formed in facilitation, she is seeking to the search creative
solutions based on coherent ethics and care of people while managing collective projects and
the social network in this time of transition. Her proposal is based on keeping an attentive and
conscious eye on individual and collective processes to arrive at a careful design in which
resources are used in the best possible way, while minimizing waste.
